The history of elephants in zoos is full of mental and physical pain. Wild elephants, astonishingly intelligent, perceptive and complex beings, live in caring and secure extended families that stay intact for life. But zoo elephants have traditionally been lonely, shipped around indiscriminately, bored, cramped, chained and beaten.

Thank you for your interest in helping elephants!

I grew up around zoos. My father was a zoo veterinarian and I worked in zoos for more than 30 years, including as General Curator of the Los Angeles Zoo and the North Carolina Zoo. I was also a professional member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) and chaired a variety of important committees for that organization.

Most important, I have worked in every aspect of elephant care, handling and maintenance, and have developed a real love and appreciation for these magnificent creatures.

I am retired now but I continue my work on behalf of elephants. I know we can do better in providing a healthier and more natural life for elephants in captivity today!

And this is where you come in! Join me in realizing my vision of giving elephants in our country the quality of life they deserve --

...Places where elephants have the space and conditions to live as naturally as possible.

...That offer the rare chance to see elephants going about their lives, roaming, playing, nurturing, reproducing and creating their own herds.

...Where everyone can come, observe and learn.

What can you do?

Join my elephant team today and become one of the growing number of individuals working to protect elephants in captivity and in the wild! Together we can make a difference!

Please also take the time to learn about some of the important projects I support.
